Philosophy of Counseling

“Trauma is defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that robs a person of a sense of power and control over their own life. The guiding principle of recovery from trauma is to restore power and control to the survivor (Jones-Smith, 2019 p.524).”

As a professional trauma counselor, I believe trauma affects people physically, mentally, and behaviorally. Which is why my approach to counseling is Trauma informed counseling. Trauma informed counseling is about restoring power and control back to the client and having an understanding the effects of trauma are not just mental but can have lasting effects within our bodies and behavior.
